"I wasn't really sure what Nona liked, so I got her a gift-card to that café down the street, and a journal. "Well.okay, here's the thing." Jonas pats his pockets before turning to the foot of his bed and retrieving a small gift-bag. It's not much, but it's better than nothing." "I like what you've done with the place!" She compliments. She notices the glow-in-the-dark stars she put up with Michael when she was eight have remained untouched. A few beanbags have been sat around the window, boxes of CDs are set up next to his bed, and the pictures Nona took of them at Edwards Island are sat at his desk. However, there are a few changes Alex can see between the unopened boxes: Posters of various movies are hung up on the walls, alongside little autumn-coloured flags that drape down to the floor. It has only been a few days since Jonas moved in, after all.
The attic still looks fairly unlived in, which makes sense. A part of her still aches when she sees the wall as a whole.Īlex makes it to the second floor, heading up the ladder towards the attic. One is of her mom and Jonas' dad, both of them smiling, hands interlocked. The ones near the bottom are older - beach days, school talent shows, Michael - while the newer ones are up at the top. Her eyes skim past the pale sea-coloured walls that hold photos taken throughout her life. She hops out of her seat, heading up the stairs two at a time. And anyways, Jonas should be calling for her right about. Gentle sunlight filters through the window, and she can hear music playing somewhere outside, anchoring her feet in place. She rubs at her temples, debating taking another Tylenol. Something about the island - the ghosts? The radio. She stirs her oatmeal, hoping that maybe mixing it enough will stir her memory.
It's not an unfamiliar feeling, but it sure is an annoying one. Alex feels like she's forgetting something.
